What applicant tracking systems do — and don’t
Applicant tracking systems differ from one vendor to the next, and each employer configures its own. Many are mainly filing and workflow tools: they collect applications, try to read each resume into a profile, and help recruiters organise candidates. We don’t claim that most resumes are rejected by software, because that depends on the employer.
What helps in every case is a resume that is easy to read and honestly relevant to the role — clear formatting and truthful experience, not tricks aimed at software.
- Parsing — the software tries to turn your file into fields such as jobs, dates and skills. When a resume can’t be parsed, Greenhouse, for example, documents that the file stays attached to the candidate and the details are entered manually.
- Relevance feedback — some systems suggest or sort candidates by fit. Greenhouse’s Talent Matching states that it does not auto-reject or auto-advance any candidate.
- Hiring decisions — made by people at the employer, using criteria and settings we can’t see.

What is an ATS resume checker?
An ATS resume checker gives feedback on two things: whether your resume is laid out in a way software can read (standard headings, plain text, nothing important trapped in images or complex tables) and how closely its wording lines up with a job posting. How do I make my resume ATS-friendly?
Keep the layout simple: standard section headings, real text rather than images, no key details buried in headers, footers or complex tables, and a common file type such as PDF or DOCX. Then make sure the skills and terms from the posting that you genuinely have appear in your resume, in your own words. Do ATS systems reject resumes automatically?
It depends on the system and on how the employer has set it up. Many applicant tracking systems mainly store and organise applications; some can sort candidates or apply screening questions, but hiring decisions are made by the employer.
